RTX 5090 Discontinued? What We Know About the Rumor

RTX 5090 Discontinued? What We Know About the Rumor

Is the GeForce RTX 5090 being discontinued? On October 10, 2026, Tom’s Hardware, VideoCardz, TechPowerUp and Notebookcheck reported claims from hardware leakers that NVIDIA has stopped supplying its GB202 chip for new RTX 5090 cards. This is a rumor, not an announcement.

Has NVIDIA responded? Not publicly. Tom’s Hardware says it asked NVIDIA for comment and the company had not responded, adding that NVIDIA typically does not comment on rumors. TechPowerUp and VideoCardz also note that NVIDIA has not confirmed the plans or announced an end-of-production date.

What is confirmed and what is still a rumor?

  • Confirmed: the RTX 5090 uses NVIDIA’s GB202 chip with 21,760 CUDA cores and 32GB of GDDR7, and GB202 also powers RTX PRO workstation cards. NVIDIA’s website still lists the RTX 5090, and the official RTX 5080 has 16GB of memory.
  • Rumor: leaker MEGAsizeGPU says “all future GB202 supplies are RTX Pro exclusive,” and an alleged factory notice shared by hongxing2020 says no more RTX 5090 models will be made, including China’s “D” variants.
  • Rumor: the same notice claims an RTX 5080 24GB will replace the 16GB model as the top GeForce card. VideoCardz notes MEGAsizeGPU has not confirmed that part.
  • Unknown: whether production has actually ended, whether prices will rise, and any specs, price or launch date for an RTX 5080 24GB.

Why would NVIDIA stop making the RTX 5090?

The GB202 chip is far more profitable in professional cards. The RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell uses 24,064 CUDA cores and 96GB of GDDR7, and the newer RTX PRO 5500 pairs the RTX 5090’s 21,760 CUDA cores with 84GB of memory. Tom’s Hardware says the alleged move “would make considerable economic sense,” while TechPowerUp doubts NVIDIA would formally call it end-of-life, since the chips would simply be redirected.

Will RTX 5090 prices go up?

The RTX 5090 launched in January 2025 at $1,999 USD (~2 739 $ CA, estimated). Several outlets, including TechPowerUp and Notebookcheck, report that street prices are already far above that launch price. If new production stops, remaining supply would come from cards already built, and Tom’s Hardware expects availability to decline and prices to be affected as that inventory runs down. That is a forecast, not a confirmed price change.

Is the RTX 5090 still available in Canada and the U.S.?

NVIDIA has not announced any change to RTX 5090 pricing or availability in Canada or the United States. Tom’s Hardware notes that board partners, distributors and retailers likely still hold inventory, so the card is unlikely to disappear overnight. Stock and prices may shift differently from one retailer and region to the next, and sales taxes vary by province, territory and state.

Should you buy an RTX 5090 now or wait?

For most gamers, the RTX 5090 was never the practical choice. RTX 5070 and RTX 5080 class cards already deliver high frame rates at 1080p and 1440p, and they are not affected by the GB202 reports.

Buy now if you need a new gaming PC or GPU today: choose based on the games and resolution you actually play, not on the 5090 rumor. Browse our graphics cards, our gaming PCs, or configure a custom PC.

Wait if you were targeting the RTX 5090 specifically and your current system still works: NVIDIA has not confirmed anything, and an RTX 5080 24GB remains unannounced. If you truly need 32GB of video memory for local AI work or top-end 4K performance, watch stock closely rather than panic-buying at an inflated marketplace price based only on leaks.
