Melted 12V-2x6 connectors have been one of the most talked-about worries for owners of high-end graphics cards. On October 21, 2026, Corsair answered with an upgraded RM1200e, the new flagship of its RMe power supply line and the company's first PSU with PinProtect, a per-pin overcurrent protection built into the GPU power connection. Corsair's press release was picked up by TechPowerUp, Vortez and VideoCardz.
What is Corsair PinProtect on the RM1200e?
A 12V-2x6 connector feeds a graphics card through six 12V pins. A classic power supply watches current on the whole 12V rail, so it can't tell if one pin is carrying far more than its share while the others are nearly idle. According to Corsair, PinProtect monitors the current on each of those six pins in real time. If any pin stays above a preset threshold for an extended period, the PSU limits power to the GPU, which makes the card turn itself off.
Corsair's PinProtect explainer adds two practical details. First, it waits for the abnormal current to last 30 seconds before acting, so a short power spike doesn't trip it. Second, it works by changing the state of the connector's two sense wires, which tells the GPU to stop drawing that much power. No software or setup is needed; it runs whenever the GPU is powered.
Does PinProtect stop 12V-2x6 cables from melting?
It is designed to lower the risk, not to make failure impossible. Uneven current through one or two contacts, often from a connector that isn't fully seated, is one of the causes behind overheating and damaged connectors. PinProtect targets exactly that case. As VideoCardz pointed out, though, Corsair hasn't published the per-pin current threshold, and the feature reduces risk rather than guaranteeing protection against every possible connector failure.
When it triggers, you'll see a black screen and the PSU fan will spin at full speed. Corsair says to hold the power button, switch off the PSU, unplug and firmly reseat the 12V-2x6 cable at both ends, and only then restart. The included cable has dual-tone tips: if you can still see grey after plugging it in, it isn't fully inserted.
What else changed on the RM1200e?
Beyond PinProtect, this is a refresh of a familiar model, so check the listing carefully. The new version (model RPS0254) is Cybenetics Platinum certified, while the earlier RM1200e is sold with 80 PLUS Gold efficiency. Look for "PinProtect" and "Platinum" in the product name or specs.
Key specs from Corsair
- 1200 W continuous, single +12V rail at up to 100 A
- Cybenetics Platinum, up to 91% overall efficiency; Cybenetics noise rating A
- Intel ATX 3.1 certified, PCIe 5.1 ready, native 12V-2x6 cable (600 W)
- Fully modular debossed cables with low-profile combs
- 150 mm deep, 140 mm fan with Zero RPM mode, new 3D Y-pattern fan grille
- Japanese 105 °C-rated capacitors, 10-year warranty, black or white
How much does the RM1200e cost and when is it available?
Corsair lists launch pricing of US$204.99 in the United States and 279,99 $ CA in Canada (Corsair's official Canadian launch price, subject to change). Corsair says the PSU is available immediately through its retailers and webstore. When we checked Corsair's US store, the black model showed out of stock and the white model was on backorder, expected to ship November 16 to 18, 2026, so stock may take a few weeks to settle.
Should you buy the RM1200e or wait?
Buy if you're building or upgrading around a high-power card that uses 12V-2x6 and need a new PSU anyway: per-pin monitoring is a real extra layer of safety, and the price is in line with other 1200 W units. Wait if your current ATX 3.x power supply works fine and your cable is properly seated; PinProtect doesn't replace good installation, and independent reviews will show how it behaves under real loads. Either way, take the time to fully seat the connector at both ends.

FAQ
Does PinProtect need software?
No. Corsair says it works automatically whenever the GPU is powered, with no configuration.
Will PinProtect shut my PC down during a power spike?
Corsair says the abnormal current has to last 30 seconds before it acts, so brief spikes shouldn't trigger it.
Which Corsair PSUs have PinProtect?
At launch, only the new RM1200e. Corsair's similar ThermalProtect technology exists as a separate 600 W 12V-2x6 cable.
Does it work with GPUs that use 8-pin connectors?
PinProtect monitors the 12V-2x6 connection. The RM1200e also ships with regular 8-pin PCIe cables and a 12V-2x6 to dual 8-pin cable for older cards.
