Hollow Knight: Silksong Expansion Announced And Original Game Gets PC Upgrades

Silksong’s Sea of Sorrow Expansion is Coming

Hollow Knight: Silksong is already a massive metroidvania adventure, but Team Cherry has revealed that it is getting even bigger. The studio has announced a full expansion for Silksong titled Sea of Sorrow, currently planned for a 2026 release.

The expansion has a nautical theme and is described as bringing new areas, new bosses, new tools, and more. Best of all for existing players, Sea of Sorrow will be free for everyone who owns Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Team Cherry is keeping most details under wraps for now. They have said that more information will arrive closer to the expansion’s launch window. For the moment, the main thing fans have to go on is the reveal trailer, which focuses more on atmosphere and tone than raw gameplay breakdowns.

The trailer shows what looks like a spherical chamber that might be some kind of engine or prison, being struck by lightning. It immediately brings to mind a Bioshock style bathysphere, hinting that Hornet could be traveling to an undersea world or at least a region with heavy ocean and depth themes.

Reaction from the community has been intense. Even with Silksong only recently out in the world, interest clearly has not cooled down. The Sea of Sorrow trailer pulled in over one hundred thousand views in less than half an hour after it went live, showing that the hunger for more Silksong content is still huge.

Why Sea of Sorrow Matters for PC Players

For PC gamers, this expansion is more than just extra story. It means a longer lifespan for Silksong and more reasons to keep it installed and ready to go on your rig. Metroidvania titles reward revisiting old zones with new abilities, and a major expansion can completely reshape how you route your runs and challenges.

While we do not have a full feature list yet, Team Cherry has already promised the core things that matter to gameplay focused players:

  • New areas to explore, which likely means fresh platforming challenges and secrets to uncover.
  • New bosses that will test your build, movement, and combat skills.
  • New tools, which should open up fresh movement or combat options and potentially change how you approach both existing and new content.
  • A distinct nautical theme, which could influence enemy design, soundtrack, and environmental hazards.

Since Sea of Sorrow is a free expansion for Silksong owners, there is no extra barrier for players on PC. If you are the type who loves 100 percent completion runs or perfecting boss fights on a high refresh monitor, this gives you another big content drop to look forward to without needing to buy a separate DLC pack.

From a performance and platform perspective, Team Cherry has a strong history with Hollow Knight on PC. While they have not yet detailed specific graphical or technical enhancements tied directly to Sea of Sorrow, it is reasonable to expect that they will continue to support a wide range of hardware, from modest laptops and handhelds to high end gaming desktops with ultrawide displays.

Original Hollow Knight Gets PC Improvements

It is not just Silksong getting attention. The original Hollow Knight is also being updated, and PC players can enjoy those improvements right now through beta branches on Steam and GOG.

Team Cherry has introduced better display support for modern setups. The update adds full 16:10 and 21:9 aspect ratio support, which is especially useful if you are playing on devices like the Steam Deck or on ultrawide monitors. Instead of dealing with black bars or weird scaling, you can now enjoy Hollow Knight with proper support for these wider resolutions.

For PC hardware enthusiasts and display nerds, this matters more than it might sound on the surface. Proper ultrawide support means:

  • Cleaner visuals with fewer artifacts from stretching or letterboxing.
  • A more immersive field of view that makes better use of your monitor real estate.
  • More consistent presentation if you regularly switch between different displays or use a handheld and a desktop monitor.

On top of the aspect ratio improvements, the beta update includes various bug fixes. While the full list is posted on the game’s Steam community page, one specific change stands out for quality of life. The game now pauses when you are in the inventory.

This may sound small, but it is a very welcome change, especially for players tackling tough areas or bosses. Being able to safely manage charms, check your items, or simply take a breather without worrying about enemies moving or attacks landing in the background makes the game feel more responsive to how people actually play.

For PC users, these tweaks come with essentially no downside. If you are already running Hollow Knight, the new aspect ratio support and bug fixes simply make the experience smoother and more modern, particularly if you have invested in a wide monitor or a portable gaming device.

Looking ahead, the combined effect of a major free expansion for Silksong and ongoing support for the original Hollow Knight keeps Team Cherry firmly on the radar for anyone into PC gaming. Whether you are min maxing your setup with a powerful GPU and ultrawide display or playing on a compact handheld, there is new content and better support on the way.
