Trying Nvidia's AI Gaming Helper: What Beginners Should Know
Share
Nvidia has introduced Project G Assist, an AI tool designed to help gamers optimize their PC settings and troubleshoot issues. The idea is simple. You can chat with this assistant on your screen and ask questions about your gaming setup or performance. It is currently in an early stage, so many features are still experimental.
If you have a desktop RTX 20, 30, or 40 series graphics card, you can try out G Assist by downloading it from the Nvidia app. The tool appears as a chatbox on your screen when you press Alt and G. It stays open even if you try to shut it down and can use a noticeable amount of memory and processing power. This is likely because it uses advanced AI models and runs directly on your computer.
I tested G Assist with a few popular games such as Black Myth Wukong, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Baldur's Gate 3. I hoped it could make my games run smoother and help me find the right graphics settings. Sometimes, it said my game was optimized, but then admitted it had not changed anything. Other times, the advice was out of date or simply wrong, like suggesting I update to older game drivers I already had. The chatbot often failed to recognize that a game was running, and sometimes did not respond at all.
The app can display charts of your computer's CPU and GPU usage, but only for short periods. While this is useful, there are already many existing apps that do the same thing. Basic questions about graphics technology like DLSS sometimes took a long time to answer or failed completely.
Overall, Project G Assist is an interesting idea, but right now it is unreliable and often frustrating to use. For now, beginners will likely find better results searching for help with traditional methods like online guides and forums. In the future, as Nvidia improves this tool, it could develop into a more helpful assistant for PC gamers.
