Sony has been well known for creating some of the best single player games like Bloodborne and The Last of Us Part 2. These exclusive titles helped PlayStation stand out and build a loyal following.
However, when the PlayStation 5 was released, Sony decided to try something new. The company planned to launch twelve live service games by 2025, which are games that are regularly updated with new content and keep players coming back.
So far, this big shift has not worked out as planned. Out of the twelve promised games, Sony has released only one successful title called Helldivers 2. Seven games were cancelled before they could even launch. Three more games, including Marathon and Concord, are still being developed but have faced many issues.
Many fans and experts think this change in direction was a mistake. The PlayStation 5 has had fewer exciting exclusive games compared to earlier consoles. But Sony is not giving up on new ideas just yet.
Herman Hulst, who leads PlayStation studios, recently said that the total number of live service games is not what matters most to him. Instead, his focus is on offering players a variety of gaming experiences and building strong communities around the games.
Rather than avoiding risks, Sony wants its development teams to try new things. If a project does not succeed, Hulst prefers to see it fail early so the company can learn and improve without spending too much time or money. To support this, Sony has started testing games more often and sharing feedback across teams to catch issues sooner.
Although some of their recent decisions have not paid off, Sony's past single player games like God of War Ragnarok have sold exceptionally well. This shows there is still strong demand for the types of games that made PlayStation popular in the first place.
In summary, Sony is learning from its mistakes and is determined to offer players a wide range of great gaming experiences rather than simply chasing trends.
