NVIDIA and NSF Team Up to Boost Open AI Models for US Science

NVIDIA is working with the US National Science Foundation to help create advanced artificial intelligence systems that will support American scientific research. Their joint effort is called Open Multimodal AI Infrastructure to Accelerate Science, or OMAI. This project is led by the Allen Institute for AI, also known as Ai2.

The main goal is to build a community and technology around fully open AI models. These are tools that can understand and process not only language but also images, graphs, tables, and other types of data. By doing this, OMAI aims to make it easier for scientists in all fields to use AI to make discoveries and speed up their research.

NVIDIA is supporting the project with powerful computer hardware and software, including the latest NVIDIA HGX B300 systems and AI Enterprise software. These tools are designed to handle the huge data sets and very complex models used in modern AI. The aim is to provide American scientists with the resources they need to train and use large language models.

A key feature of this partnership is that all the AI models and the software will be open to researchers at little or no cost. This means anyone doing research, from students to experts, can take advantage of these cutting edge tools. The initiative is also providing training and help for young researchers just starting out in the field.

This effort supports teams at universities across the country, including the University of Washington, University of Hawaii at Hilo, University of New Hampshire, and University of New Mexico. The partnership helps ensure the United States stays ahead in science and technology by investing in the tools and skills needed to lead in AI research.

The OMAI project also fits in with recent actions by the US government to strengthen American leadership in AI. By making advanced AI more available and open, NVIDIA and NSF are helping to build a stronger future for research and innovation in the country.
