How the Navy is Using AI and NVIDIA Technology to Train Future Leaders

On the scenic coast of Monterey California the Naval Postgraduate School is shaping the future of military leadership by combining advanced artificial intelligence with hands on learning. The school is a key educational center for the US Navy and is now boosting its capabilities with help from NVIDIA a leader in AI technology.

NVIDIA has given the school a powerful DGX GB300 AI computer. This system will allow students and faculty to work with the latest AI tools and methods. It will help over 1500 students 600 staff members and their many partners learn how to use AI for solving real world problems from planning missions to predicting weather or even conducting disaster recovery operations.

The school has also teamed up with MITRE a nonprofit organization that works on technology for the government. Together they are working on big projects like the ASPEN simulation platform. Built with NVIDIA tools ASPEN can create very realistic digital versions of real world environments. For example it can simulate underwater vehicles dealing with tough conditions like strong currents or low visibility. This lets researchers test and improve new technologies before using them in the ocean.

NVIDIA's technology helps with every part of the process. Small edge computers handle real time data from sensors and cameras on underwater robots. Big server computers train the main AI models and coordinate huge amounts of information. This three computer approach lets the school and MITRE develop advanced systems safely and securely.

A big part of their research is focused on better understanding the ocean and weather. Predicting changes in the sea and sky is crucial for keeping Navy ships and crews safe. Using AI simulations students can practice planning and reacting to new challenges in a safe virtual space. The AI models are trained using NVIDIA tools so they can process information from many sources such as sonar or satellite data and create detailed 3D maps.

For instance if a satellite breaks or space debris becomes a threat the models can predict where hazards might move in the future. This kind of information protects equipment and helps make better decisions in tense situations.

Students at the Naval Postgraduate School do not just study theory. They work on real projects for the Navy and Joint Forces applying what they learn to real missions. With help from faculty and partners students can turn ideas into practical solutions tested both in the lab and at sea.

NVIDIA also supports the school by offering AI training courses and resources. Through expert workshops and new training centers students and staff gain access to the latest knowledge in AI research. This prepares graduating leaders to make the most of AI both in the Navy and in their future careers.
