Free Adult Content Makes a Return to Itch.io as Payment Processors Consider Supporting It

Itch.io, a popular website for indie games and creative content, has announced that free adult content will once again be shown on its platform. This update comes after adult content had been removed because one of the website's payment partners was pressured by a group against adult material.
Since Itch.io is smaller than other game sites and allows users to upload their own content easily, the team felt they had to take strong action when there were problems with their payment system partners. The first step is to bring back free adult material that does not require payment. This helps to fix the issue for now while the platform creates a better solution.
The founder of Itch.io shared that they are still talking with payment companies and plan to allow paid adult content slowly. Their goal is to make sure they can safely support all content creators over time. The platform is also contacting new payment processors that may be more open to adult material.
One of the main payment companies working with Itch.io, called Stripe, explained that they currently cannot support sexually explicit material because their banking partners do not allow it. However, Stripe also said they would like to support this type of content in the future. The company and Itch.io are continuing to discuss how they define what is allowed.
This situation began after a group from Australia asked major payment companies to stop handling money for websites like Steam and Itch.io that allow adult games. In response, Itch.io is looking for ways to give creators more freedom without risking the platform's future.
